Practice
I work from psychodynamic and psychoanalytic psychotherapy perspectives. These perspectives believe that many of our actions, thoughts and feelings are motivated by pieces of ourselves outside of our awareness (the unconscious). We will work together to bring these pieces into your awareness. An important part of these theories is that who we are (our personalities) are patterned largely on significant childhood relationships. I find it helpful to learn about these relationships as they can teach us a great deal about who we are as adults. The relationship between the two of us as therapist/patient is also highly valued in my work. It is of the utmost importance that you feel safe and free to say whatever is on your mind without fear of judgment.
The type of work I do is particularly effective for those who have chronic emotional distress and have explored other avenues, such as short-term therapy and medication, but have not found lasting change. My job as a therapist is to learn about you as a person with a unique emotional organization living in a very difficult world, identify how you have learned to adapt to this world, and then help you understand the system you have built to cope. This self-understanding is where freedom is found. I believe we are capable and deserving of more in life than just coping. The therapeutic process can lead you from coping to freedom. I am specifically interested in the relationships in your life – romantic, professional, and personal – in which patterns emerge and repeat, as well as how you see yourself. I work well with individuals who struggle with low self-esteem.
I have extensive experience working with individuals in the LGBT community. I have particular expertise working with transgender and gender non-conforming children and adolescents, as well as their families.
